LignaTool

Dovetail Mortise and Tenon Template System

Make dovetails as if you owned a CNC wood milling machine, using this simple and cost-effective tool!

Below: A real live application using the Lignatool. With the templates and a heavy-duty router, floor joists were fitted by cutting dovetails with the templates. Note the "thumbs up" in the picture below. This customer finished his multi-storied floor system in just 3 DAYS, after having budgeted several WEEKS for the job.

Sliding side fence, mounted on the adjustable stop fence, used in repeated work where the position relative to the side of the timber is the same from one dovetail to the next. It can be mounted on left or right.

Angle and height adjustable fence allows you to cut compound angles repeatedly. The small bottom lever locks the angle adjustment plate, which serves also as the fence for the adjustment of the length of the dovetail. The large lever on the top is the locking lever for the dovetail height fence, which slides up and down in the sliding track of the base plate.

In Europe, where CNC machines abound, nevertheless more than 500 LIGNATOOL systems have been sold in 2 years to professionals who know the alternative — CNC or tedious labor.

LIGNATOOL was developed in Austria over a two year period to make perfect wood-to-wood dovetail mortises and tenons quickly with just a heavy-duty router. It comes with all the necessary parts and accessories you need to make superb, tight, dovetail mortises and tenons - in minutes!

Why don't you, too, become more efficient by securing one of our LIGNATOOL dovetail systems?

SAFETY NOTE:

When milling into any wood, especially in knotty material, it is possible for kick-back to knock an unsecured router off its path. At worst, it can cause injury. At best, it may damage the bit or the template, or the log.

This is not a problem with the LIGNATOOL. Lignatool LOCKS THE ROUTER SECURELY into a guide plate, and SAFELY and easily leads the router in any direction around the template until the tenon or mortise is completed.

  • Modular system built upon base templates.
  • All accessories can be interchanged between all different template pitch sizes.
  • Choose from three dovetail shapes, with different pitch (width/height ratio), and three system kits, according to your need for complexity and cross-sections.
  • All system kits allow you to make compound angled dovetail connections.

  • Router is LOCKED SECURELY onto template.
  • Use with any heavy-duty router 2000 Watts or higher
  • One size fits most applications.
    One template can mill cross sections from 2" x 2 ” to 8" x 14”
  • Additional side fence for quick repeatable clamping
  • Tilt fence for compoud anglesAngle adjustable fence (right) allows you to cut compound angles repeatedly.
Movable in 2 directions to 51 °, important when cutting rafter/purlins
  • Adjust fence in infinite increments.
Tenon height is step-less, can be set at any position, which is important for compound angles.
  • Mill difficult jack-rafter/rafter connections
  • Online calculation of the optimal connection height (available soon)
Free online application for static calculations. Optimize the connection height according to the grade and cutting ability of the timber.
  • Routing direction from any side, left or right.
The system permits you to allow for quality and grain direction of the wood for cleanest tearfree milling.
  • Varying tenon lengthVaried mill depth
Change ball-bearing collar rings to achieve different mill depths. (Ask for more information)
  • Variable Tenon length
  • Make dovetail joints without gaps
    - for visible connections or exterior use
  • Different milling angles
Use 8° or 15° router mill bits
  • Reversible, replaceable blades.
Enjoy the convenience of replaceable blades.
  • Carbide blade for wet timber conditions
This special router bit creates an overlap differential to keep tight after wood is dried. See extra accessories at the bottom of this page.
  • Process speed: 15 connections / hour
Easily produce 15 connections per hour by using LignaTool's smart clamping accessories.
  • Use with almost any cross section of wood
  • Use anywhere - in the workshop or on site.

How long does it take to cut a dovetail mortise and tenon?

With an efficient clamping set-up you can expect to cut 15-18 dovetail connections in an hour.

This deceptively simple device gives you control over a normally time-consuming facet of timber joinery. Make connections tight and accurate, eliminate squeeks on floor joists, join hip or valley rafters. Make complicated connections where only steel would normally do.

You'll wonder, "Why didn't I think of this?" And then maybe: "I can make one of these!" But don't fool yourself: it took two years and a lot of thinking to perfect the Lignatool to this level.

How it works

Milling a Dovetail Mortise and Tenon - in Detail

Adjust the milling depth on the router with the setting gauge

Define the height of the joint and adjust the mortise template

Fasten mortise template with clamps or wood screws

Securely lock router into guide plate with a 90° rotation

Mill the mortise

Mount tenon template with clamps or wood screws

Lock router securely into position with a 90° rotation
